Barcelona can easily steal your heart… but don’t let it steal your wallet too.

Barcelona is one of the most vibrant and fascinating cities in Europe. Its architecture, food, culture, beaches and street life attract millions of visitors every year. But like many popular tourist destinations, Barcelona also has pickpockets who take advantage of crowded areas.

The good news is that Barcelona is generally a safe city. Most crimes are non-violent petty theft, and with a little awareness and common sense, you can easily avoid problems.

As a local guide who has been walking the streets of Barcelona with travelers for years, this is one of the questions I get the most:

“Is Barcelona safe for tourists?”

The answer is yes. But like in any major tourist destination, it helps to know a few things before you arrive.

In this article, you’ll find practical advice to help you avoid pickpockets in Barcelona. And if you want even more tips, you can also download my free Barcelona Safety Guide at the end of this post.

Where Pickpockets Usually Operate in Barcelona

Pickpockets usually work in places where there are many distracted people. This doesn’t mean you should avoid these areas, just stay a bit more aware of your surroundings.

Some of the most common spots where theft happens include:

  • Las Ramblas.

  • The metro, airport and train stations.

  • Popular tourist attractions such as Sagrada Família or Park Güell.

  • Busy markets like La Boqueria.

  • Beaches during summer.

  • Crowded nightlife areas.

  • Bars and restaurants.

These places are beautiful and worth visiting, but they are also ideal environments for opportunistic theft.

Common Pickpocket Tricks in Barcelona

Pickpockets are extremely skilled and often work in teams. Many techniques rely on distraction.

Some of the most common tricks include:

  • The distraction trick: Someone asks you for directions, or starts a conversation while another person takes your belongings.

  • The push in the crowd: In busy places like metro stations, someone bumps into you while another person takes your wallet or phone.

  • The map or newspaper trick:A person shows you a map or newspaper and places it over your phone or bag while stealing something.

  • The spill trick: Someone spills something on you and offers to help clean it while another person takes advantage of the distraction.

  • The “friendly” approach: Some pickpockets pretend to be tourists or friendly locals trying to help.

Knowing these tricks already puts you one step ahead.

Simple Tips to Avoid Pickpockets in Barcelona

The best protection is awareness and a few simple habits. Here are some practical tips that will make a big difference.

  • Use crossbody bags or secure backpacks. Avoid open bags and keep zippers closed.

  • Do not keep your wallet in your back pocket. This is one of the easiest targets.

  • Keep backpacks in front of you in crowded places. Especially in the metro.

  • Avoid leaving your phone on the table at terraces. Phone theft from restaurant tables is surprisingly common.

  • Do not hang bags on the back of chairs. Use hooks or keep them on your lap.

  • Split your valuables. Do not carry all your money and cards together.

  • Keep your passport in the hotel if possible. Carry a copy instead.

  • Stay aware in crowded areas. Most pickpockets look for distracted tourists.

What To Do If You Get Pickpocketed in Barcelona

Even if you take precautions, sometimes theft can still happen. If it does, try to stay calm and act quickly.

First, check nearby trash bins. In many cases pickpockets take the cash and discard wallets or bags nearby. You won't believe, but long time ago I found my wallet (empty, but at least with my cards, and id inside a big trash).

If you cannot recover your belongings, you can report the theft at the Tourist Police Station located at La Rambla 43. They provide assistance and translation services for visitors.

You can also contact your bank immediately to block your cards and use tracking apps if your phone was stolen.
